The dance of self care and self love: A Qigong perspective

In a world that moves so fast, it's easy to forget the importance of slowing down and tending to ourselves. We often hear the terms self-care and self-love interchangeably, but in truth, they are not the same. Yet, like yin and yang of Chinese medicine, they are deeply connected and essential for a balanced, and vibrant life.

What's the difference:

Self care is the practice of taking action to preserve or improve your health. Physically, mentally, and emotionally. It's brushing your teeth, nourishing your body with wholesome foods, getting exercise, or giving yourself permission to rest.

Self love, on the other hand, is the inner landscape from which self care grows. It's the deep, compassionate relationship we cultivate with ourselves. It's how we talk to ourselves when no one is listening, the way we honor our worth, and how we forgive our own imperfections.

How Qigong cultivates both:

In Chinese medicine and Qigong, we recognize that our energy (Qi) flows through the body and can be influenced by how we move, breath, think, and feel. A daily Qigong practice is a powerful form of self care. It helps us calm the nervous system, clear stagnant energy, and enhance circulation. It also nourishes self love by grounding us in the present moment and fostering a felt sense of connection to ourselves and the natural world around us.

Through regular movement and breathwork, we begin to feel better in our own bodies. We release tension, boost confidence, and return to a state of inner harmony. When we take time for ourselves in this way, we are saying, I am worth it! That in itself is self love in motion.

Mirror practices & affirmations:

Something as simple as speaking kindly to yourself in the mirror for 1-2 minutes a day can be transformational. Whether your brushing your teeth or washing your face, try speaking kindness to yourself.

  • I am worthy of love and care

  • I forgive myself for ...

  • I am growing, healing, and becoming more of who I am meant to be

  • I am grateful for this day, for my life, for my heart, and I love me

It may sound silly to talk to yourself in the mirror, but don't worry, no one will even know.

Mirror self talk practiced daily for just 30 days can create noticeable shifts in your mood, outlook, confidence, and energy.

Give it a try...

Nature, presence, and connection:

Chinese medicine teaches us that nature is our greatest teacher. When we align ourselves with the rhythms of the earth, we begin to move more fluidly through life. Taking a walk in the woods, watching the clouds drift by, or simply breathing air is a form of self care that nourishes the soul.

Equally important is how we connect with others. Making eye contact, truly listening, and acknowledging another's presence are profound forms of both giving and receiving. When we are full within, we become better able to show up for the people we love.

The myth that self care is selfish:

Lets release the old myth that self care is selfish. In truth, it's the most selfless act we can commit to. When we care for and love ourselves, we radiate that same care and love to others. We become more present, more grounded, and more generous. We become the calm in someone else's storm, simply by tending to our own.

Through Qigong, mindful movement, positive rituals, and nurturing our relationships, we cultivate a life of balance and wholeness. Self care and self love are not luxuries, they are essential roots that allow us to grow, thrive, and connect deeply with the world around us.
